| I fell for it again.
Bought a ticket to see the Reader's Digest version. The real movie will be out on the extended DVD - but it will not be the same, you know. I have pined for this movie. I got my tickets as soon as they went on sale. I crossed the days off on my calendar. I queued. I was awaiting the Big Day in feverish anticipation. And I got the Reader's Digest version. The one without the Healing House. The one with the missing scenes. The loose ends. The plot holes. The Oscar? Ah, I'd give it to Billy Boyd, to be honest. Oh, they were all brilliant, no question - but I was only touched, really touched, by Pippin and Merry. Who would have thought that I'd grow fond of the two irritating gnomies by the end of movie three? I feel a little cheated. But then again, the Reader's Digest version of Return of the King is still a masterpiece, the Lord of the Rings trilogy a milestone in movie making, and it will take a long time for any other movie to top this. I'll watch it on my small TV screen. In November. When there will be no movie to pine for this year. I'll be missing it. And I know I will cry. |
