THE ART OF
JINX
CHIBI-GATE
Ohayou, Campers!
Japanese animes are one of
those things you either love or loathe. I usually connect either "Pokemon"
with this expression ... being a faithful and loyal disciple of Tex Avery, I
usually tend toward "eeeewwwww", but in this casE, I make an exception.
What you get to see here are drawings in the so-called "CHIBI" style - this
means the characters look childlike, with a big head and tiny bodies. Roughly
you could say it's making grown-ups like eight year olds.
The
CHIBI
style is often used when the character should show an exaggerated emotion -
really angry or scared - but I think the main reason why this style is so
popular is that it makes the characters look "cute". And it does, oh boy it
does!
CHIBI is often also refered to as "SD" - which means "Super
Deformed".

The artworks you can see
here were done by JINX, and once again, we stand in awe of the creativity
and the skills that can be found within this fandom.
Alas - once
again it showed that honesty doesn't pay.
JINX contacted MGM (who, after 5 years, still
haven't managed to get some decent merchandise on the circuit) about getting a
license to produce t-shirts with her drawings. Good idea - would be about high time the
folks at the MGM merchandise department realize that they'd
make so much more money with some kewl, stylish stuff.
Let's
face it - girls wanna have fun and look good, and t-shirts with JINX's artwork would definitely fulfill both
purposes. Wouldn't have done MGM any harm to arrive in the 21st century, fashEonwise.
And what happened? She was told that MGM was in the
planning stages for a Stargate SG-1 animated series, and that selling JINX's art could
cause "consumer confusion".
HELLOOOOOOOOOO there - in
case you didn't notice: WE are the "consumers"! And the only confusing bit about
this is that MGM - please let this sink in, ladies and gentlemen - asked JINX to
take her site down! Yeah, this is no joke!
They are within their
rights to deny her a license. But JINX's art is clearly a parody, and therefore
protected. Whatever happened to the good ol' constitutional rights? I have no
idea what's going on over at MGM right now, but this is pretty fresh coming from
a country which is usually first in line when it comes to the issues of "freedom
of speech" and "freedom of expression".
This can't be tolerated. What
would come next? Who would come next? Leah Rosental's wonderful cartoons? Or the
Dannypulations in the Lion Pit? Chris Butler's Southgate cartoons? No way! Maybe
the internet community is only a small one, but we've done our share in
promoting Stargate SG-1. We don't expect a "thank you" for
this.

But if MGM really intents to
go through with this, I do expect that those who are involved with the
production who enjoy her art, and the art of so many other webmasters out there,
pull ranks. Over and over it was stated that the production does care about the
fans, and does consult the internet to see how the reception of an episode was.
Now this would be one fine occasion to let deeds follow the words.
We
will keep you posted on the outcome of this unpleasant affair. In the meantime,
don't forget to visit Jinx's site and let her know how much you love her art.

Are you an artist looking for
a place to show (off) with your art? Do you know somebody who you think
he/she/it would need some attention? Then go here and let us
know!
(If you should be
impressed by my knowledge on japaneseE/FONT> anime - I didn't have a clue what
"CHIBI"
is until Mamoko explained me - here my thanks to you, oh patient-with-an-ignorant
one! Arigatou gozaimasu!)
Osaki ni!
