BOY! I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN!
It's nice to belong to somebody. Also if it's only a target group. In this case, as a woman of 33 years of age, I fit right into "target" group of Stargate SG-1.

I always thought a "target" group had nothing to do with hunting, but ah - that's not completely correct - they're hunting for our money!

So what are the PRO's of a mainly female audience from a producer of a TV show's point of view ?
  • We work. We earn money. We're willing to spend it.
  • We are the ones in charge of the remote control (there are studies - sorry guys!)
  • We are the ones who shop for presents - you wanna sell DVD's and videos, you better count on us!
  • We're dedicated and loyal.

Hey, sounds good! So women should be the dream audience of every show! But wait - there are the CON's:
  • We're willing to spend on our money. Alas not on dodgy t-shirts or he-man style action figures.
  • We are in charge of the remote control - and if we don't like the show, off the show goes!
  • A mature woman who's seen her share of life is more critical and can't be fooled over plot holes with a sexy space babe.
  • Women are more dedicated and loyal. If you axe their favourits, chances are they will not just swallow the toad but fight back.
  • Women appreciate great SFX - but not as the main point of entertainment.

In other words: the much-lusted after 14-18 year old male - legend goes he's the "typical" science-fiction fan - is much easier to please and handle. Give him lots of BIFF BOOF BANG ("BIGGER! BIGGER!") and some eye candy, and he's happy. Yeah, yeah, generalizations, I know.
So, the main audience and target group of Stargate SG-1 are women.

That's good.

To my knowledge, there is no woman writing for Stargate, there are no women directing episodes, there are no female producers.

That's bad.

But what we do have are authors who admit they have problems writing for a female character. It's either "Jack's girl" or "Supersam", and Janet doesn't get much more to do than look worried, either. Ok, there are only two female cast members, anyway - but don't be surprised if two actresses with as much potential as Teryl Rothery and Amanda Tapping get restless.

Well, at least the authors have now Osiris to play with - who, if we want to nitpick, used to be a man. This "sex-change", as so smugly mentioned by Lord Zipacna (the Carmen Miranda of the Goa'uld), could make for some interesting lines - but will most probably not.

Women, the majority of this planet's population, are a minority on our favourit TV show. And while Michael Shanks got to direct a really huge and complicated episode without ever having done so before - and he did a fab job there - we're still waiting for Amanda Tapping's director's debut. And are waiting. And waiting. One wonders why.

What ruffles my feathers the most is that this men's movie world seems to think we choose our TV program with nothing but our hormones and on the drool factor of the male cast. At least I can't see another reason why, for exampla, MGM tries to sell us the new character Jonas Quinn as a "hunk". My IQ is higher than my bra size, thank you very much, gentlemen.

You know what I want? Clever plots. Intelligent dialogues. Strong characters. The hunks? Hey, we got O'Neill, Jackson, Teal'c, Hammond, Davis and a lot more. Don't think we can take anymore in erotic males on TV.

About time for some substance rather than eye candy!
Would you lust after this target group ...?
